VH-CKF / A17-421 De Havilland DH-82A Tiger Moth of the Royal Aero Club of Western Australia Inc, named 'Shirley Adkins', at Royal Aero Club of Western Australia Open Day, Jandakot Airport, Western Australia - 21 May 2022. MSN DHA596/T200, built in 1941. Ordered for Rhodesia as DX535 but taken on RAAF charge on 4 October 1941 as A17-421. Acquired by Dept of Civil Aviation (DCA) and converted for civil use with a raked-forward undercarriage which permitted the use of a tailwheel and wheel brakes. Register VH-AZL on 26 June 1947. Was fitted with a cockpit canopy. Re-registered VH-CAG on 4 May 1949 and based at Maylands Aerodrome, Perth. By April 1957, the canopy had been removed, and the aircraft was used by DCA to test prospective aerial agriculture pilots. Sold to the Gliding Association of Western Australia in 1960 and reregistered VH-TUG, as it was used as a glider tug. It was sold in 1956 and became VH-RNQ with Royal Newcastle Aero Club, Broadmeadow, NSW, but was damaged in 1959 and sold for spares. Barry Markham restored the aircraft in 1991 as VH-NOV and in 1998, set a number of records when he flew it from Perth to London, to raise funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Photo © David Eyre
