Aviation Association of Western Australia Inc (AAWA) was invited to have a close-up look around RA-76503 Ilyushin Il-76TD-90VD of Volga-Dnepr Airlines.

The aircraft arrived on 24 May 2019 as flight VI1966, delivering some mining equipment from Houston via Seattle, Anchorage, Petropavlovsk, Incheon, Clark International, and Denpasar. It departed on 6 June to Ho Chi Minh City.

History of the IL-76

The Ilyushin IL-76 was designed in 1967 to a Soviet Air Force requirement for a freighter to replace the Antonov An-12. It needed to carry a 40-ton payload for 5,000 km in under six hours, operate from short, unprepared airstrips, and in the worst Siberian/Arctic weather.

The prototype Il-76 first flew in March 1971 and entered service in 1974, powered by Soloviev D-30 turbofans, and around 860 aircraft were produced at Tashkent in Uzbekistan.

The IL-76MF (military) or IL-76TF (civil) version had a fuselage 6.6 metres longer, and PS-90A-76 engines, able to carry a payload of 60 tons (or longer range) – this first flew in 1995.

From 2004, a number of civilian IL-76TDs were converted to Il-76TD-90VD with the PS-90 engines to comply with European noise limits, and a partial ‘glass’ cockpit. A total of 960 IL-76s of all versions have been built.

RA-76503 was built at Tashkent, Uzbekistan. It made its first flight on 15 October 2011. It previously visited Perth in May 2013, July 2013 and July 2016.

Air New Zealand resumes Boeing 787 Auckland – Perth services, replacing leased Wamos Air A330 ZK-NZE Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner of Air New Zealand in special all black livery, at Perth Airport - 29 October 2023. Air New Zealand resumed operating Auckland services using its own aircraft from today. ZK-NZE is seen departing as NZ176 to Auckland on 29 October. To enable Air New Zealand to build capacity while bringing other stored aircraft back online after the COVID-19 pandemic, the airline had wet-leased (aircraft plus crew) Airbus A330-243 aircraft from Spanish airline Wamos Air from 15 November 2022 to 28 October 2023. Wamos Air A330-200 EC-NCK was flown to New Zealand on 10 November 2022 and entered service on the Perth route from 15 November 2022, operating daily as NZ173 from Auckland and departing as NZ174. It operated its final Perth-Auckland service on 27 April 2023 and was replaced by EC-NBN until 28 October 2023. ANA resumes Tokyo – Perth services JA893A Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner of ANA, at Perth Airport, Western Australia - 29 October 2023. **Resumption of passenger services to Perth by ANA today** Flight NH881 at bay 153, Terminal 1, after arriving from Tokyo-Narita at 7:49pm. It departed as NH882 at 10:31pm. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020, ANA suspended Perth services, with their final passenger service on 30 March 2020 (they operated some freight services in January 2021).
