Australia Day 2011 air show - Perth city, 26 January 2011
AAWA co-director Neville Murphy attended the annual air display over the city of Perth and the Swan River to celebrate Australia Day.
For the benefit of the many international visitors to our website, Australia Day is celebrated on the 26th of January each year. Captain James Cook claimed Australia for the British on 22 August 1770, but another 18 years passed until 26 January 1788, when Captain Arthur Phillip, commander of the First Fleet of eleven convict ships from Great Britain and the first governor of New South Wales, arrived at Sydney Cove, beginning the British occupation of the eastern half of Australia. Beginning in the 19th century, 26 January was noted as "First Landing Day" or "Foundation Day", which later became known as "Australia Day" and is now a national public holiday.
